Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
January 13, 2025
Psalm 46:1-7
1 God is our refuge and strength, a help always near in times of great trouble. 2 That’s why we won’t be afraid when the world falls apart, when the mountains crumble into the center of the sea, 3 when its waters roar and rage, when the mountains shake because of its surging waves. Selah 4 There is a river whose streams gladden God’s city, the holiest dwelling of the Most High. 5 God is in that city. It will never crumble. God will help it when morning dawns. 6 Nations roar; kingdoms crumble. God utters his voice; the earth melts. 7 The LORD of heavenly forces is with us! The God of Jacob is our place of safety. Selah
Good Morning. Today is a new day full of possibilities!
Fear not; God is with us! David uses such vivid imagery in this passage. Most of us have had moments when we felt as if the world was falling apart, with mountains crumbling and the waters roaring in a rage.
God does not promise that we will not have these problems. In fact, the word used is when the world falls apart. The critical takeaway is that God is with us regardless of the turmoil and catastrophe surrounding us! I closed my message yesterday with John Wesley’s final words on his deathbed. “Best of all, God is with us.”
I can’t read these verses of Psalm 46 without considering what follows these words:
8 Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields[d] with fire. 10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Come and see what the Lord has done . . . Be still, and know that I am God.
During our challenges, God calls to us: “Let go of those things that trouble you and listen. I bring you peace and love.” Matthew 11:28-29 Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.…
Loving Lord, Maker of all things! You are always with us. Remind us to lean on you when we feel as if we will fall. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God provides comfort during the storms that overwhelm us.
Best of all, God is with us! Pastor Liz
