Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
September 23, 2024
Psalm 27:1-6
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation. Should I fear anyone? The LORD is a fortress protecting my life. Should I be frightened of anything? 2 When evildoers come at me trying to eat me up it’s they, my foes and my enemies, who stumble and fall! 3 If an army camps against me, my heart won’t be afraid. If war comes up against me, I will continue to trust in this: 4 I have asked one thing from the LORD it’s all I seek: to live in the LORD’s house all the days of my life, seeing the LORD’s beauty and constantly adoring his temple. 5 Because he will shelter me in his own dwelling during troubling times; he will hide me in a secret place in his own tent; he will set me up high, safe on a rock. 6 Now my head is higher than the enemies surrounding me, and I will offer sacrifices in God’s tent sacrifices with shouts of joy! I will sing and praise the LORD.
Good Morning! Sing and praise the Lord!
I am amazed at the power of community in times of crisis. In those chaotic moments, we drop all of our preconceived notions and come together to help. When a community experiences a natural or manmade disaster, I have seen strangers work together to overcome the challenges before them. This unity is a testament to our strength and support for one another.
One might ask, “Why does it take such an event to bring us together, allow us to cross the lines of prejudice, and break down the barriers we have constructed?” For some, after such a life-changing experience, the barriers are forever gone, but for others, they slowly begin to rebuild them as the cause that brought them together is overcome.
Many are frightened by the craziness and dysfunction filling our communities, country, and world. Our forefathers, who came from diverse backgrounds, came together to provide a space for people to come together in the “great melting pot.” As individuals, we are weak and unable to withstand life's challenges, but when we come together, our strength grows.
During our earthly walk, may we work to create the harmony God created, where all are welcome at the table regardless of our differences. Our strength lies in joining together in unity.
Faithful God, Thank you for creating us. We are scared and weary. Our world is in turmoil, with many factions trying to take control of others. Help us shine your light so that others may find the way to your peace. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Sometimes, God uses strangers to send us the help we need.
Break down the walls and join together! Pastor Liz
