Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

Jeremiah 18:1-6
1 Jeremiah received the LORD’s word: 2 Go down to the potter’s house, and I’ll give you instructions about what to do there. 3 So I went down to the potter’s house; he was working on the potter’s wheel. 4 But the piece he was making was flawed while still in his hands, so the potter started on another, as seemed best to him. 5 Then the LORD’s word came to me: 6 House of Israel, can’t I deal with you like this potter, declares the LORD? Like clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in mine, house of Israel!
Good Morning! The Lord is the potter; we are the clay!
I remember when I was a young teenager and my friend got a pottery wheel for Christmas. She invited me to come and help her learn to use the wheel, and we imagined the beautiful pots we would create. Well, it was a lot harder than we could have imagined. It looked so easy on the cover of the box and the instruction sheet. No matter how hard we tried, our attempts were awful. Truly, the only thing we did well was make a mess. We had bits of clay everywhere. When we finally got everything cleaned up, she put the wheel back in the box, and I don’t remember us ever trying to make pottery again.
The Good News this morning is that God never gives up on us. By God’s grace and the work of the Holy Spirit, we are shaped and molded into God’s perfect vessel. When we become misshaped or broken, back we go to the potter’s wheel to be rethrown and made new. Praise be to God for His unending grace. May we never find ourselves sitting on the shelf gathering dust because we are too much work.
Faithful God, Thank you for creating us. We are flawed and make so many mistakes. Thank you for the Holy Spirit’s work to remold and remake us into the beings you created. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: We are safe in God’s hands.
Shaped and Molded! Pastor Liz
