Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
July 7, 2024
Ephesians 4:29-32
29 Don’t let any foul words come out of your mouth. Only say what is helpful when it is needed for building up the community so that it benefits those who hear what you say. 30 Don’t make the Holy Spirit of God unhappy—you were sealed by him for the day of redemption. 31 Put aside all bitterness, losing your temper, anger, shouting, and slander, along with every other evil. 32 Be kind, compassionate, and forgiving to each other, in the same way, God forgave you in Christ.
Good Morning! This is the Lord’s day! Let us rejoice!
In a world where you can be anything, be kind. This morning I am smiling as I consider being kind. I was talking to Elliott, my youngest son, yesterday. He had shared with me earlier in the week that he was sharing the message at church today. I asked him what he was preaching about, and he said kindness.
It is not by chance that this passage on being kind came up this morning for our devotional. It is truly God’s mysterious ways of working within and around us. Sharing kindness in a weary world produces hope.
For those of us who are approaching our golden years, it transports us back to a simpler time when kindness was more visible. It was a time when manners were instilled in us as children. Perhaps it seemed like a simpler time because we were children and not yet tainted by the challenges that life brings.
Being kind to one another shouldn’t be hard, but sometimes it is especially when we feel as if we have been wronged by someone. Kindness cannot be faked. When we let go of our cynicism and look for and share kindness, the world is instantaneously a better place.
32 Be kind, compassionate, and forgiving to each other, in the same way, God forgave you in Christ.
God of Love, Thank you for this beautiful gift of life. Leave it to us to make kindness a difficult thing. Help us let go of everything blocking us from being kind and compassionate. We thank you! In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Kindness reflects Christ’s love and influences lives in profound ways.
Offer kindness to others! Pastor Liz
