Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  April 25, 2025

Isaiah 55:6-11

6 Seek the LORD when he can still be found; call him while he is yet near. 7 Let the wicked abandon their ways and the sinful their schemes. Let them return to the LORD so that he may have mercy on them, to our God, because he is generous with forgiveness. 8 My plans aren’t your plans, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. 9 Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my plans than your plans. 10 Just as the rain and the snow come down from the sky and don’t return there without watering the earth, making it conceive and yield plants and providing seed to the sower and food to the eater, 11 so is my word that comes from my mouth; it does not return to me empty. Instead, it does what I want, and accomplishes what I intend.

Good Morning. Thy word is available to those who listen.

How can we find something if we don’t know what we’re looking for? Imagine walking up to a group of your friends who seem to be looking on the ground for something. You want to help, so you start looking as well. The problem is that you didn’t ask what was missing. It is possible that you might stumble upon the missing item by chance, but it is unlikely that you will be of much help.

People often complain that God isn’t listening or doesn’t answer their prayers. God is always listening and answering, but God’s response is not always what we want or expect. Like the one seeking an unknown item, we might stumble upon the answer and say, “Ahh, I get it.”

Another problem occurs when we ask a question and forget to wait for the answer, or we’re so distracted when the answer comes that we don’t hear it. Later, we realize that an answer was given, but we didn’t listen.

When we pray to God, we must seek the answer that God provides. Some answers are obvious and immediate, while most develop and are revealed in God’s time.

Loving Lord, Maker of all things! Thank you for listening! Help us remember to listen, too! Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God is speaking! Are we listening?
