Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
April 1, 2023
Read Matthew 5:14-16
14 You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on top of a lampstand, and it shines on all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.
Good Morning, Let the light of God shine through you.
How do you feel about turning on lights? I know some people who begin turning on light the moment that they get up, and others who appreciate the gradual, natural light that comes with sunrise. I suppose this might be dictated by our sleep/work schedules.
For the night owls or those who work at night, the glow of the morning sunrise is an annoyance which is preferably blocked by blinds and curtains. The early risers might have different ideas and eagerly anticipate the beautiful colors and ever-changing horizon as they look upon the world.
Our question this morning is “what do you do once you have the light?.” Do you let it shine for all to see, or do you try to hide it away so no one can see it? The purpose of light is to shine so that all can see. Do you buy a lamp to listen to music? Would you by a lamp and never turn it on? Most would say that we buy a lamp so that I can see in the darkness.
When we invite Christ into our lives, we are filled with his light. We are called to light the way so that all might find their way in the darkness. How do we let the light of God shine through us? God’s light shines through our thoughts, words, and actions.
Each time we are kind to a stranger the light within us glows more brightly. As the light grows, more of God’s children find their way back to the path of righteousness. When we stumble or fall into the darkness, we must look for the light. It is always shining for those who seek to see it.
The light begins with God and represents the love of God. While we were yet sinners, God sent his son to bring the light into the darkness and saved us from ourselves. 12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
Blessed God, We thank you for Your blessings. There is much darkness covering our world. You sent Jesus to light our way. Please continue to seek us and help us find our way home. In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: My actions and words can lead someone closer to Christ.
Let your light shine! Pastor Liz
