Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  March 27, 2025

1 Samuel 17:43-46

43 The Philistine asked David, “Am I some sort of dog that you come at me with sticks?” And he cursed David by his gods. 44 “Come here,” he said to David, “and I’ll feed your flesh to the wild birds and the wild animals!” 45 But David told the Philistine, “You are coming against me with sword, spear, and scimitar, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of heavenly forces, the God of Israel’s army, the one you’ve insulted. 46 Today the LORD will hand you over to me.

Good Morning. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Who doesn’t love the story of an underdog? March is the month of Cinderella teams who go out, win games, and defy the odds. Growing up in Indiana, basketball was the great equalizer. The dreams of glory sent many youngsters out to shoot free throws every night after dinner. We loved and embraced the stories when tiny school teams took on the giants of the city schools and won. The movie Hoosiers depicted such a story.

When David agreed to take on the giant, Goliath, Saul placed his armor upon the young boy. Of course, it was heavy and too big, so David took it off. Truly, even the Israelites doubted their wayward wanna-be hero, but at least they could breathe for a bit longer because they weren’t sent out to do this impossible task.

When Goliath saw who would represent the Israelites, he made fun of David. In today’s world, the oddsmakers would have given David no chance of beating this giant. David, God’s humble servant, faced Goliath with only the tools of a shepherd and the belief that his Lord would protect him against the assault of his enemy.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

David faced the mighty Goliath armed with his faith and trust that God would save him on his perilous path.

Loving Lord, Maker of all things! We stand on your promises to be with us and protect us along the way. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day:  Trust in God, who equips us for our journey.

Humble yourself and be saved! Pastor Liz
